Our courses have developed extremely well this year and both I and the students are thoroughly enjoying them again after a challenging year.
I am running another course on January 17th if anyone is interested and available. We have frozen prices at last years rates for the year ahead; this will be our third year without any increases so representing etter value than ever.
We start on the South Downs (collection from Brighton Station available) where we develop key skills in getting to know your camera. After abou an hour and half we move on, by car to a secondary location on the Downs and start utilising what we have learned in the morning. Stopping at a Sussex pub for lunch, we then travel back down to Brighton seafront and take in all its glory, the beach huts, Peace Statue,, wonderful Victorian architecture, fishing boats on the beach at Hove and ending at the derelict West Pier at around 4pm, when the light finally fades.

Landscape Photography Course Brighton, Sussex

This weekend, despite a temperatre of -2 in the morning and intermittent snow flurries, saw us all thoroughly enjoy the day ot with our cameras in the landscape of Sussex, around Brighton. We run a 1 day landscape photography course here in this lovely town, starting on the exquisite South Downs with there gentle drama, and on this occassion frozen fauan. Mushrooms were the early interest, along with the natural landscape. Wrapped up warm and with thermos flasks of sweet tea and soups we ventred along the South Downs Way in the direction of Winchester for a mile or so, before the cold got too mch and we headed back to the car park with a series of outstanding images.
For me, what makes these courses so enjoyable is watching students discover new aspects of their cameras and starting to apply new learned knowledge hands on. It is an absolute pleasure.
After a very long and leisurely 2 hour lunch (it is usually 45 mins at most) due to the exteme low temperatures outside, and after some refreshingly intelligent conversation, we set off to Brighton seafront.
The light got the better of s shortly after 3.45pm bt not before some lovely shafts of light fell on the beach huts and across the Chanel, giving us some magnificent skies and silhoettes to contend with. The starlings, as they are prone to be at times, were late. However they gave a spectacular display as they raced in from above the Grand Victorian sqares in Hove and over the sea to there roosting position over the Palace Pier. They appear to have abandoned the West Pier, in it's dilapidated state in favour of the Palace Pier. Known as a murmuring, the starlings gather in social groups of two or three, several thousand in each flock, and circle and sway high above the Pier slowly descending s the light fails and the sun sets. As each flock pass each other they produce to the eye a thick cloud of density that is perfect for photographing and remains absolutely awe inspiring. I have been enjoying these daily events for nearly 20 years now and as a natural phenomonen it never ceases to me. The event started apparently after the Great Storm of 1987 which destroyed much of their habitats, a great nmber of Elms were lost that night and are still used in furnitre making in the City. As such a rare wood it is highly popular.
Many other trees were lost too obviously hence this fantastic daily event at this time of year, right through into new year, of thousands upon thousands of starlings swirlng above the Pier with such grace and silence.
The volume increases as they land, bt within a few minuites there is silence again and the event is over. Almost as quickly as it started.
This weekend has made me realise just how much I enjoy these courses....the prospect of getting out of bed and going outside for the day on sunday didn't initially see me jmping ot of bed. But once out in the landscape it was an absolute pleasure and even I found myself lying prostrate on the frozen ground photographing mushrooms in Macro growing out of cow pats....I guess I could always stack shelves in Tesco's for a living instead but hey, I love what I do. This weekend also saw us run our first Open House as part of the Brighton and Hove Artists Open Houses. My beautiful partner Georgina was displaying her jewellery that designs and then has produced by artesans in Italy and I had several Art prints and canvases on display too, some around Brighton, one from West Wittering and a short series from Tate Modern. So, to the Courses again, it is clear I need to do more offline marketing to get these courses noticed. If I could do these 5 days a week I would not only be quite well off but extremely happy. They are a joy to conduct and the feedback from one student telling m I was a good teacher, is always encoraging to hear not having formally trained in teaching. The really good thing is that I am able to convey the photographic skills people are seeking and impart that knowledge clearly and concisely in a manner that is both understood and appreciated.
Now I can wait for the next one, so get booking folks! If you are buying a camera for somone, get them a days course too to learn how to use it and get the very best from it. The Course Vouchers make excellent Christmas gifts and are open for 12 months.

Handmade is a company providing Webdesign solutions for small to medium sized Companies.
Our most recent client has been Italian and Charming Ltd, a jewellery wholesaler based on the south coast and about to step up into offices in Hatton Garden. The brief was straight forwards enough. As a wholesaler with sole rights to distribute Zoppini products of Florence, Italy, the company needed a web profile. Working with a newtowrk of sales Agents and using Zoppini branding, imagery from a photoshoot with Maxim magazine, and products sold by Zoppini including fashion jewellery in silver and stainless steel, as well as watches, pens, cufflinks, and charms, in addition to the fashion jewellery produced by Zoppini, a simple, functional and descriptive site was required to increase presence in the market and engage new retailers to sell Zoppini products throughout the UK and Northern Ireland.
Some of the imagery is a little outdated, in that a new set of images are in production for 2010 and we should have those shortly from Zoppini directly. Relevant contemporary imagery relates to the Concept Store in Dubai. Other imagery was produced by ourselves, through www.FivewaysPhotography in Brighton, Sussex after attending a sales meeting at the Companies HQ. The Company also has major networks in Arezzo, Italy, south of Florence, and I will be attending a tour in Tuscany with the Agents in early 2011 to produce imagery of the meetings with Zoppini next year and producing relevant and unique imagery in the lovely Town of Arezzo as well as the surrounding Tuscan countryside and hills.
We are retained by Italian and Charming; the company owner was particularly pleased with the manner and way in which we conveyed their professionalism, through photography and engaging the search engines as well as producing the written articles from 'bare bone' information given to us on both Italian and Charming Ltd and Zoppini.

Heatwave, at last!
Summer's definately here at last!
Last night, early evening, I spent driving around some of the lovely old villages of Sussex, just clear my head and get away from the keyboard! It's truly lovely out there, under the edge of the Devils Dyke, east of Burgess Hill, it is stunning. Poynings, Fulking, (no I am not swearing) Edburton, a lovely string of villages along the huge slopes and hills of the Dyke. I went of in search of poppy fileds, not to much avail. It might still be too early. Some summers it is as though the fields themselves run with blood.
I am running one of the landscape photography courses this saturday with a small group, one place remaining if anyone is interested, and again on the 19th July. I thoroughly enjoyed BBC4's run on female photograpehrs at the weekend, Linda McCartney's work in particular, and her comments on Hendrix cover on Electric Lady Land that he had asked her to create for him before the record company in Europe usurped his won wishes with the more widely known image it was released with. I would have liked to have seen more on Jane Bown though.
Having had my apetite wet i've been spending more time out with the camera this week, even in this heat, early morning or early evening is best. The light by 11am is too harsh and stays that way until gone 5pm, by 6pm those lovely long summer shadows are emerging and by 7pm everything is bathed in a lovely deep orange overglow. Wonderful days. The Nikon D40 is holding up well, a little plastiky for my liking at times, but small and lightweight, ideal in so many ways, simple functions, Nikon's build quality and good versatility. Still love the old F90x though.....film remains close to my heart despite the alluring and cost effective digital era, film images once printed are simply better, especially monochrome, using a master printer.
Dont forget to drink lots of water folks!
